ABSTRACT

In the chapter, the author elaborates on the overall results of the five lexico-grammatical patterns in which metadiscursive nouns are used and the general distribution of these patterns across disciplines and the generic sections of research articles. The fact that nouns in the relation category are used least frequently suggests that academic writers do not prefer to use nouns to establish the connection or relationship to information in a proposition but may fall back on other linguistic means. Different disciplines maintain distinct ways of knowledge making and cognitive styles, so the people can discover their different epistemological and ideological approaches to knowledge and the world through their distinct selection of metadiscursive nouns. Metadiscursive nouns are unspecific in meaning, so they require lexical specification to ensure successful communication. The interactive perspectives of uses of metadiscursive nouns are evidenced by their variation across disciplines and the generic sections of research articles.
