ABSTRACT

In the modern era, China’s families have changed in lockstep with economic and social development. Due to the incessant infiltration of Western powers after the Opium War, China spiraled from a feudal agrarian society down to a semi-colonized and semi-feudal society. The colonial activities of Western powers in China promoted the development of cities and industries in some areas, and as industries became more developed, a small-family model appeared among poor workers. In reality, most of China still had the lifestyle and production methods of an agrarian society during this period. Rapid industrialization and rural society transformation changed the ways in which Chinese families lived and engaged in productive activities. The soaring economy and the strict family planning policy of the past 30 years have resulted in smaller, nuclear families.
