ABSTRACT

As a specialist advisory teacher for autism, I have worked with hundreds of young people, supporting them to better understand their autistic identity. Over the years, I have developed different techniques to enhance these conversations, and people often ask me about them. My motivation for creating these books was to ensure that more young people have access to positive conversations around their autistic identity, and they are empowered to make life choices that ensure they build on their strengths. To facilitate that, I realised I needed to create both a workbook for the young person to personalise, and a guidance book for the adult involved. This became about empowering the family around the young person, and by that, I mean the whole unit of parents/carers, wider family members and school staff.
