ABSTRACT

Frequent, clear, broad, honest, and transparent communication, up and down the organizational hierarchy, is an essential attribute of effective shop floor communication. When mobile devices are integrated into the internet of things network, they can become immediate and valuable communication tools. Communication between machines is typically denoted as “machine to machine”. Weekly meetings can be used to communicate and review performance trends of key metrics such as yield, scrap, rework, line output, and Over Equipment Effectiveness. Daily meetings, at all levels of operations, should facilitate timely sharing of data and information with those who need to know. Monthly meetings are typically held with middle and upper management interested in reviewing overall plant performance. Teams are expected to take ownership of their line, understand what they needed to do to meet customer shipments, and allow them to vocalize any concerns they had during the Gemba walk to achieve their daily/weekly performance goals.
