ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on operational discipline which explores employee activities and behaviors necessary to ensure the policies, procedures, systems, and standards of the enterprise are implemented to achieve targeted and desirable results. A structured approach to improving a sustainable operating discipline may include creating awareness and understanding of its benefits and the drawbacks of not being disciplined. Since operational discipline is influenced by culture, an on-going effort is likely required to drive organizational change, if the current level of discipline is insufficient to meet existing market expectations. In manufacturing operations, achieving excellence requires a degree of discipline that allows an organization to be the best that it can be. Integrity builds trust, reliability, and confidence: key characteristics of a disciplined organization. From a business perspective, operational discipline is demonstrated by commitment of employees to complete their standard work routines the same way, every time.
