ABSTRACT

Standardization is a way to control process variation so that consistent and predictable products and services can be manufactured and delivered as planned. Standards are the foundation for process control and continuous improvement, upon which manufacturing optimization and excellence are realized. Standards often start with shop floor cleanliness and orderliness (5S), since a dirty and unorganized workplace often breeds indifference and inefficiency in work performance. Following a methodology for workplace organization is the first step in achieving manufacturing excellence and, as stated, the foundation for process standardization. Standard work instructions describe work that is highly specified as to content, sequence, timing, and outcome. In a high-volume manufacturing facility, the “standard operation sheet” is used to document the number of operators within a production line and their workflow, along with the cycle time expected to complete a full cycle (one unit).
