ABSTRACT

Operational intelligence can be significantly improved when an organization understands how various metrics are used and how different types of measures influence shop floor performance. Data provides the insight management and engineering need to understand current operating conditions and can help direct daily efforts to maintain stability and enable meaningful shop floor improvements. Data analysis is about taking data, examining it logically or statistically, and preparing meaningful information that can be understood and acted upon, if needed. Data reporting should capture the information necessary for process monitoring and control. Data can result from measurements used to monitor process performance. An individual “owner” should be assigned responsibility for gathering specific data and reporting each key process indicator (KPI). KPIs can be categorized into three types: inputs, process activities, and outputs. It is a way of measuring success relative to customer expectations and business value.
