ABSTRACT

Data visualization can be facilitated by creating a central area or designated location where metrics can be displayed for periodic monitoring and review by those expected to do so as part of their daily work routines. In addition to being a key tool of process control, data visualization sets the stage for continuous improvement by creating a basis from which progress can be measured and sustainable improvements confirmed. The overall concept of visual management is to communicate important information in audio and visual ways. This chapter describes various visual communication elements, such as safety, quality, productivity, cost, delivery, inventory and people. Visual controls need to remain relevant through their accessibility, timely updates, content value, and ease of interpretation. In manufacturing, a common way to achieve these objectives is through the application of information or communication boards placed in common or public areas.
