ABSTRACT

Throughout his career, Alexander Sokurov has gained acclaim from critics and viewers alike due to his masterpieces, Mother and Son (1997) and Russian Ark (2002) along with his most recent films. This recognition is in part due to his cinematic experimentations using the medium of painting. This chapter aims to analyze how he uses painting and theater intrinsically in his work to frame his artistic outlook and how he uses it to travel further down new experimental paths. In Swaniawski's words, it is as if Sokurov is trying to “annul” the medium of film through intermedial crossovers and create an enhanced cinematic experience for the spectator.
