ABSTRACT

The notion of transference has a long history in psychotherapy originating with Sigmund Freud. The early psychoanalytic focus on transference from caregivers to the therapist, has shifted to a social cognitive perspective whereby it occurs whenever a person is reminded of someone from their past. Transference feelings are typically quite strong, consistent with the impact that they and transference interpretations have on psychotherapy outcomes, with the relevant research reviewed. Negative transference can limit psychotherapy by blocking progress with mental health issues due to intensification of the condition. It also contributes to resistance and noncompliance. Utilizing this distinction assists therapists in applying transference interpretations.
