ABSTRACT

The international principle of sustainable development has been shown to have application in wide-ranging areas of EU law and policy, including through the principles of subsidiarity and proportionality. Its legal context for application was revealed to entail under the broad principle of sustainability or by means of its component principles. This chapter examines how sustainable development is applied in the EU legal order through the precautionary principle to promote, in particular, the environmental protection dimensions of sustainable development. The precautionary principle is used to illustrate its primary relevance for environmental protection in the context of the other two dimensions. 1
