ABSTRACT

Sustainable development has been established in the previous chapters as an international principle with primary relevance for regulating economic activities for environmental protection alongside the competing need for ensuring economic and social sustainability. Sustainable development has been shown to be capable of application through sub-principles: the precautionary principle, the polluter pays principle, and the principles of public participation and access to justice. These sub-principles have been applied in wide-ranging areas of EU law and policy to address the environmental, economic, and social dimensions of sustainability.
