ABSTRACT

The role of consumption and the notion of lifestyle production in the connections between sustainability policy, planning practices and gentrification are increasingly important to consider within cities, in particular how these connections blend together at the everyday and localized level of the urban community and neighbourhood. Consumerist practices are a central part of gentrification and are particularly relevant for understanding who gentrifiers are in terms of their embodied experiences and what forms of commercial services, housing and leisure activities are expected by gentrifiers. This chapter turns towards the production of environmentally oriented lifestyles that have become part of current gentrification practices. While not wholly directed by policy or institutionalized within official planning processes, there are notable exchanges between formal policy themes, such as the growing connection between sustainability and creative city policies and adopted by multiple urban governments, and the everyday practices of gentrifiers who engage in environmentally sustainable activities.
