ABSTRACT

The pioneering company engaged in product design contributes to shifting the stock of planetary artefacts from legacy to frugal products by designing and creating items that are resource-efficient and -sufficient—that is to say, that use minimal amount of resource per unit, and contribute to resource use reduction overall (as well as minimising the impacts on sinks and regulation associated with resource use). To do this requires creating products with specific properties; and fostering these through specific design interventions. These properties and interventions are the subject of this chapter: efficient products are “resource-sparing”, “nature-inspired” and “user-centred”, while sufficient products are “long-lived” and “shareable”.
