ABSTRACT

(p. 227) The definition of the Arabic term for hoarding (hakira) is to have control over something. It also means to monopolize merchandise and to hold it so that it may be sold at a higher price. The original meaning of the term in Arabic is ‘collecting’ and ‘holding’. With respect to food, the meaning is to collect and withhold it from sale so that it will become scarce in the market, thus leading to a price increase.
