ABSTRACT

In this chapter, I consider various arguments for why democratic citizens ought to be held morally responsible for climate change or whether we have reason to excuse them. To do so, I make use of the fact-sensitive account of ought-assignment elaborated on in Chapters 3 and 7. My concern is to articulate the trade-off between demanding too much of democratic citizens and maintaining a liberal-democratic framework in which we have normative reasons to think that individuals should be free to do what they want (as long as they do not infringe upon anyone’s rights).
