ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on the factors underpinning and influencing the decision to bid within the prospective host destination. However, at a conceptual level the decision to bid is often indicative of a desire not just to increase economic revenues, but also to fundamentally reframe the economy of the host destination. One of the most notable cases of the use of events as a tool for economic reframing and urban transformation can be seen in Glasgow, Scotland. Major events have a long track record of being used as a facet of nation-building projects. A developing or emerging nation attempts to reposition itself on the world stage by securing the right to host a sporting mega event. This repositioning can have serious repercussions beyond the boundaries of the bidding nation, causing a renegotiation of relationships between the prospective host and its neighbours.
