ABSTRACT
Motor vehicle designers have largely responded to the need for greater road safety through hardware solutions directed at minimizing personal injury to the occupants of vehicles. There is evidence that the presence of standard stop lamps on motor vehicles reduces thinking time from approximately two seconds to one second for both mild braking and medium braking, as well as in cases where there was need for severe braking. There are two locations for the rear-end display that merit consideration: incorporated among the existing standard tail-lights and indicators at a low level; and fixed at eye-level. The suggested use of red lamps for the deceleration indicators are in sympathy with the need for conformity of any new system with the one already established for signalling braking. If the system proposed merits further consideration, it might be incorporated within a standard design of a rear-end signalling array.
