ABSTRACT

Lord Mountbatten was also a man with complete confidence that he could overcome any resistance. So long as he stayed in London, Jinnah did not give a reply and Mountbatten left the impression in the British capital that both states would agree to a dual governor generalship. Mountbatten was busy working for the acceptance of the plan and preparing the announcement. As soon as he was free from this he launched a fresh offensive toward Jinnah. On July 5, Mountbatten received a formal letter from Liaqat Ali Khan on behalf of the Muslim League in which the viceroy was asked to inform the king that the League desired Muhammad Ali Jinnah to be the first governor general of Pakistan. Thus the struggle came to an end and the necessary entry was made in the independence bill presented to Parliament. Thereafter nothing good could be expected from Mountbatten.
