ABSTRACT

Management of RLS (Figure 5) commences with nonpharmacologic approaches (21). Physical activity, warm baths, massage, and mental alerting techniques can provide symptom relief. Some patients may benefit from a reduction in caffeine, nicotine, or alcohol intake. If low iron stores are detected, supplementation with oral iron preparations may be beneficial. Open-label studies of intravenous iron therapy have yielded promising results, but one controlled trial was stopped due to a lack of efficacy (22).
