ABSTRACT
This chapter presents an interview, of Mrs. Leola Blackmon, which took place in Carroll County just north of Holmes County. Both counties are rural, poor, and located on the edge of the Mississippi Delta, but Carroll County's population is only 45 percent black. Also, compared to Holmes County, very few blacks in Carroll County are independent farmers who own their own land. The Movement in Carroll County was never as strong as it was in Holmes County, and it really only lasted for one year—1965. Mrs. Blackmon is an intelligent, active, and courageous woman. She was one of the first people to be involved in the Carroll County Movement, and she was the only woman spokesperson. White teachers in the public schools send their children to the private, all-white academies.
