ABSTRACT

Kriel is a white South African Afrikaner. He was born in Rhodesia, now called Zimbabwe, in the town of Katuma, now called Kadoma. His parents moved to South Africa when he was two years old, so he does not know Zimbabwe at all. His parents first moved to Benoni and then they went to stay at Bela-Bela. Their movement from place to place was motivated by the search for a better place for farming. In Benoni they struggled as it is closer to the city centre but then they found Bela-Bela. Bela-Bela is a farming area in Limpopo Province which is situated along the border of Gauteng Province. Kriel explains that even though his parents were farmers like most white traditional South African Boers, 1 amongst some white people in those days not all was good; there were times when they only ate pap 2 with no meat. He also found it appalling that some black South Africans assumed that all whites had everything easy. Kriel’s family was not a rich white family in those days.
