ABSTRACT

Music in the movies is an essential element of the filmmaking process and is often a significant factor that contributes to box office success. Throughout the world, there are thousands of major and independent film and television productions each year which create income opportunities for composers and songwriters. Films typically are released in motion picture theaters, but they create significant subsequent ancillary revenue streams for their producers and the attached songwriters, composers, and publishers, when they are made commercially available as DVDs, and when they are exhibited on global, free, network, satellite, cable, and pay television outlets. Royalties from the sales of songs and scores which are included on soundtrack albums, digital download or streaming sites, and commercial advertising cam - paigns also generate license income and royalties for creators and publishers.
