ABSTRACT

This chapter outlines how music is managed in terms of the actual creative output from artists, songwriters, composers and lyricists. It describes what the songwriter may encounter and provides discussion for those that want to know more about the work of the music publisher. The Music Publishers Association (MPA) claims that the UKs publishing market is the world's 4th largest music publishing market making for 10 per cent of worldwide revenues and is second only to the USA as a source of repertoire. Simply having a publisher take an interest in a particular song or catalogue is not reason enough for a songwriter to sign a contract with them. Major music publishers can supply advances and finance for the artist or songwriter to facilitate concentration on the creation of songs. If the composition or song exploited is published, the publisher member will receive any fees due then pay the composer under the terms of the composer-publisher agreement.
