ABSTRACT

Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT) has been shown to reduce symptoms caused by traumatic events. Groups utilizing the TF-CBT model have been effective in reducing post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms. TF-CBT is a stage model that strengthens client skills related to relaxation, affect regulation, and cognitive coping. This activity draws on the use of incorporating music within the TF-CBT model. Music is a powerful medium that can assist in expressing emotions and thoughts. Music is a form of currency that allows individuals to express themselves and portray their identity to others, especially among adolescents. Music can also be used in the relaxation and cognitive coping stages. Instrumental music can be particularly helpful for relaxation, but any genre can be used as a coping strategy. The therapist leading the group led the group members through the initial stage of the TF-CBT model, psychoeducation.
