ABSTRACT

This chapter is an expanded case history of a certain commonplace man who developed a malignant tumor of the pancreatic islet cells during his late fifties. The case is of particular interest because it is the story of a man whose cancer surely should have killed him, but somehow, did not. An analysis of the forces interacting during the course of the illness includes several psychological and physical variables. The isolation of these par ticular variables from the whole fabric of existence is somewhat arbitrary and probably cannot be considered to be “ variables” in the sense of scien tific research.
