ABSTRACT
Drawing upon laboratory studies scholarship that ranges across alchemy, cabinets of curiosity, and the lab-field divide, the theatre laboratory is contextualised within the discursive elaboration of the term laboratory itself. With a consideration of similar terms curiosity and wonder, and moving beyond the history of spaces and practices that inform conceptions of a laboratory, this chapter analyses the tropes, mechanisms and organisational structures that contribute to the study’s archetypes.
