ABSTRACT

The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) is an area of compliance that may be necessary for you to consider. The NFPA publishes a series of consensus standards that focus on hazards related to fire. These standards are referred to as consensus because they are technically not law in and of themselves, although various areas around the country are given the option to adopt and incorporate them into local law. The NFPA standards are often used when determining the degree of safety that is present in a given situation, and they are referred to by building and construction engineers to meet many insurance requirements for installations of equipment or building additions. Unlike governmental regulations, the NFPA standards are copyrighted, so the primary resource for obtaining a copy of the applicable standards is directly through the NFPA. Below are several NFPA standards that may merit review due to their potential application to the transportation industry.
