ABSTRACT

This chapter summarizes the efforts of the federal interagency lead-based paint task force, summarizes the goals of Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) strategy, and describes how the federal agencies activities are integrated into a national implementation plan for eliminating childhood lead poisoning from exposure to lead-based paint. In the fiscal year 1992 Appropriations Committee report, the House of Representatives directed the EPA to work with the Department of Housing and Urban Development and Centers for Disease Control to develop an implementation strategy for reducing childhood exposure to lead-based paint. Primary prevention initiatives are essential to reducing the incidence of, and ultimately eliminating, childhood lead poisoning. When completed, the national implementation plan will contain descriptions of over 80 federal projects and activities that contribute to the reduction of exposures to lead from lead-based paint and childhood lead poisoning. Centers for Disease Control efforts in surveillance and epidemiology complement grant program activities.
