ABSTRACT
As we have been discovering, international migration forces a democracy to give serious thought not only to whom it should admit but also who should receive its citizenship. The issuance of citizenship is important because it brings with it a host of rights, duties, benefits, obligations, burdens, and privileges between individuals and states. This chapter explores the most common ways that individuals receive citizenship.
