ABSTRACT

This chapter is the first of four which unpack each of the sections of the SRCL framework, exploring the nature of each section in turn. Situations arose for teachers in this study when they encountered an interruption that challenged their sense of pedagogical equilibrium. This moment was recognised as it gave rise to feelings of unrest, curiosity, perplexity or surprise. This chapter illustrates that interruptions become apparent because the Situation cannot be managed intuitively. Situations occur when the teacher perceives an incongruity between their internal desires and intentions and the external context in which the teacher is working. Situations differ in terms of immediacy as some Situations can be short lived while other Situations may result in ongoing simmering tensions.
