ABSTRACT

The arts, like religion, morality or science are significant in human life in many different ways. The thesis I am concerned with is that amongst these, the arts constitute an area in which we have knowledge of a unique form. This may well be the least interesting, indeed the least important or valuable, aspect of the arts. Many who claim that we have religious knowledge also consider the beatific vision or communion with God far more important than that knowledge. In morality, knowing what is one's duty is surely secondary to actually doing it. Knowing what other people think and feel may be less valuable than certain forms of human relationship. In art, enjoyment may be more important than anything else. I am interested in the very limited thesis that amongst the other aspects of art, we do have knowledge in art.
