ABSTRACT

Introduction This chapter discusses the conduct, challenges and expectations of counter-piracy efforts in Indonesia. It focuses on both the Indonesian Navy and civil maritime security agencies and their interaction with foreign counterparts. Understanding how Indonesia deals with the problem of piracy and sea robbery is crucial to the international community, given that the archipelago is located along the main sea lines of communication (SLOC) between the Indian and Pacific Oceans. The rise in piracy and sea robbery incidents in the vicinity of Indonesia over the past couple of years could undermine the safety and security of commercial ships sailing within these SLOCs.
