ABSTRACT

This chapter analyses the experiences of women who take part in the production of club spaces as part of the night time economy. It also explores some of the reasons for the marginalization of women as club promoters, DJs and drug dealers. The chapter discusses the performance of gender played out in the production of club spaces. The arguments raised highlight that female producers of club spaces are disadvantaged in many ways because of their gender. Involvement in the cultural industries as consumers or for work includes participation in urban spaces, which raises issues of gendered use of the city. There are limitations to women's participation in the night time economy of the cultural industries and a study found that only twenty nine per cent of users of Manchester city centre after six thirty in the evening were female.
