ABSTRACT

Dawah has always been a major concern for Muslims, beginning with the Prophet Muhammad who was not only the preacher of a new religion and the head of a new community, but also an effective teacher and an enthusiastic promoter of learning. Some Muslim youth are caught between two extremes as they are sometimes forced to live in virtually two different worlds, or between culturally Muslim homes and an outside world that may seem Islamophobic at times. The main concern therefore for such youth is the issue of identity and particularly their religious identity. Since the mid-1990s, there has been a dramatic rise in the number of Islamic satellite channels and an equal increase in the number of young Muslim preachers who feature on such channels promoting what they term a moderate vision of Islam in a new modern preaching style. Their preaching programmes depart from the old-style preacher who cites the holy Quran and preaches in perfect classical Arabic.
