ABSTRACT

This chapter examines the use of performance appraisals (PAs) in organizations; specific attention is paid to the role of work analysis in building effective appraisal systems. Organizations use PAs for many different purposes, ranging from salary administration, employee feedback, and termination decisions to serving as a criterion for organizational research and selection test validation research. When used properly, PA is a valuable human resource management tool, helping organizations staff positions, identify training needs, and reward employees. Performance appraisal is also essential for effective coaching and development of personnel.
