ABSTRACT

The Linux operating system provides a multiuser and multitasking computing environment. It allows multiple users to log on to the same computer system simultaneously. Users, based on their roles, will be assigned different priorities and permissions. To assist the management of users and groups, the Linux operating system includes various tools for user account management. In this chapter, we will investigate what needs to be done for user account management. Then, the Linux user management tools will be introduced. The Linux operating system supports the directory service for more sophisticated user and computer management. This chapter will discuss the directory service and illustrate the use of the directory service for user account management through hands-on practice.
