ABSTRACT
Chapter 7 describes the long-standing difficulties that arise throughout the course of chronic disease. We describe the bidirectional relationship between family functioning and health management disease, particularly focusing on the complex decisions families make about how to meet needs for caregiving over time. We present a case study of a teenager with poorly controlled type 1 diabetes who had recently been reunited with his mother after she was released from being incarcerated for several years.
