ABSTRACT

This chapter describes how healthy lifestyles education programmes are constituted by paying close attention to the means by which outsourcing these programmes to external providers has been re-imagined by teachers and principals as natural and necessary a 'perfect' practice. The National-led coalition government developed a new policy and funding regime for schools to access a range of sport-related coaching programmes. Schools are also required to spend their money on the ‘right’ providers in a way that achieves the specific aims of Kiwisport. Kiwisport played a vital role in the creation and implementation of healthy lifestyle programmes. Teachers, principals, and external providers were persuaded that the outsourcing of health and physical education to external providers was best practice. Teachers were, by and large, seen by students as lacking the appropriate content and pedagogical knowledge in comparison to the expert sport coaches and health education providers.
