ABSTRACT

The subject, the object, the gaze, the spectator and the specular artifice have all received varied attention in terms of academic literature. The image positioned between reality and the realm of fantasy remains an area of contested scrutiny, particularly in terms of its association with the screen. The incestuous bind with the screen often projects the notion of watching into another paradigm of reality where endless possibilities unfold. This chapter interrogates our preoccupation with a visuality enabled through digital platforms which circulate images en masse, and in the process seek our attention ad nauseam – inscribing ourselves and bodies into it while celebrating disembodiment.
