Biology in the twentieth century

In Chapter 8 we talked about what we called the “cellular turn”—the shift of attention of biologists away from organisms to the cells from which those organisms are made. This inward trend continued into the twentieth century, this time to the study of the molecules that operate within those cells. We will call this the “molecular turn,” and we will see that it has brought about a fundamental shift in the way we look at living systems.
