ABSTRACT

Food security continues to deprive people across the globe of opportunity and well-being. It is entrenched by poverty and inequality and exacerbated by an increasing number of wide reaching shocks and stresses. The complexity of food security demands the application of systems analysis that is inclusive of development stakeholders. Systems analysis can help identify multiple solutions required to address the complexity and avoid unintended negative consequences and possible trade-offs between economic, health, social and environmental objectives. Ongoing theoretical and conceptual development is necessary to tackle the complexity and ensure that practical, sustainable solutions are identified that have minimal trade-offs for society, the environment and development. Ongoing capacity development and professional development are essential to build a cadre of well-grounded and up-to-date professionals to deal with the complexity and inform research and policy about the daily realities of the food insecure.
