ABSTRACT

This chapter presents an analysis of recent non-motorized transport (NMT) travel behaviour data in Cape Town, Dar es Salaam and Nairobi, collected in 2010. A comparison between historic data in the three case cities, and 2010 collected data, reveals that NMT modes are underestimated, due to traditional focus on commuter travel. In all cities, NMT is dominant mode, which makes a case for why improvements in NMT networks and infrastructure provision are essential. NMT modes are undoubtedly dominant mode in Nairobi and Dar es Salaam, and in Cape Town NMT is significant mode at some 47" of trip segments. As trip segments to and from public transport stops and stations are mostly by means of walking, access to public transport services is essential, and travel time to public transport is important performance indicator. During process of data collection by African Centre of Excellence for Studies in Public and Non-Motorised Transport (ACET), all household members were asked to complete trip diary.
