Universities in the United States have responded to the tremendous growth in the nonprofit sector over the past quarter-century by developing programs for future leaders of the sector. University-based programs in nonprofit management and philanthropic studies are available at the graduate and undergraduate level, in non-credit and continuing education programs, and increasingly online. This entry traces the emergence of third-sector studies within the university and maps curricular changes over time, with particular attention paid to current trends. A synopsis of an ongoing debate regarding where within the university is the “best place” for the location of these programs is provided.
