ABSTRACT

This chapter provides an overview of major commercial fisheries in the high north, the global and regional management frameworks that apply to the fisheries, as well as an account of the process regarding potential future fisheries in the central Arctic Ocean. It discusses the management and harvest of living marine resources in the north to include significant fisheries, an understanding of "Northern" as including the sub-Arctic seas surrounding the central Arctic Ocean is necessary. Iceland is situated just south of the Arctic Circle, and all fisheries taking place in its waters can therefore be considered "Northern". A scientific meeting in 2016 developed a science plan laying out the finer details of how potential resources can be mapped, something that will require survey activities in the central Arctic Ocean. An important question concerning the future development of northern fisheries is how to adapt to the effects of climate change.
