ABSTRACT

Development of the finite element method (FEM) makes it possible to create a large number of commercial engineering software. Each engineer has possibilities to make a structural analysis in the fields of structural mechanics, heat transfer, etc. An engineer who is supposed to create a structural design of a structure has to make an assessment of his calculations. From time to time when an analyzed structure is non-standard, commercial engineering software may give erroneous results of calculations. Sometimes it is hard to specify the reason of errors in calculations. It depends on many factors. An engineer has to be sure that the applied type of the finite element (FE) is error-free. One of the most common problems in the description of finite elements is the locking effect. Numerous different concepts have been developed to define and explain this effect (see e.g. Chrós´cielewski et al. 2002).
