ABSTRACT
In this chapter, we examine the importance of IDEA – inclusivity, diversity, equity, and accessibility – in the field of agricultural and biological engineering. We provide an overview of the relevant terminology and present a framework for incorporating these principles into the design process. We explore how students can approach inclusive design through various lenses, including ethics, systems thinking, stakeholder analysis, teamwork, community engagement, social justice, and resilience. We also consider the implications of inclusive design in both curricular and community-based participatory design practices. Finally, we offer actionable recommendations for individuals, institutions, and the profession to promote IDEA in our curricula and profession. Through this chapter, readers will understand the vital role that inclusive design plays in the engineering profession's future.
