ABSTRACT

In this paper we present the basic concepts of operations of a hybrid liquid nitrogen and internal combustion engine currently under development by Ricardo Innovations, Dolphin N2 and the University of Brighton, the CryoPower recuperated split cycle engine (RSCE). The engine is based on a new split-cycle combustion concept utilising isothermal compression via cryogenic injection to maximise the efficiency of the engine, while also providing near zero polluting emissions from the dilution effects. Combined experimental and numerical findings will be presented and the effect of evaporation dynamics of the LN2 are explored. This study aims to improve the understanding of the spray process evolution in order to achieve optimal isothermal compression.
