ABSTRACT

Coral reef aerial images can clearly reveal geomorphic zones: the outer sandy sea bottom, outer reef slope, reef crest, reef flat, backreef, and nearshore zones, in order to characterize the distribution of anemonefish and host anemones. This chapter explores combinations of water depths and geomorphic zonation of host anemones and anemonefish and examines their patterns of habitat use. While the effects of interspecific competition among anemonefish and host anemones are often unclear, 3D analyses of fringing reef structures reveal their habitat use strategies. Water depth ranges of drifting larvae and seafloor substrates might explain distribution patterns of host anemones on 3D reef structures.
