ABSTRACT

Comfort is an overused concept. Wellbeing is a more comprehensive term than comfort. Ong (2013) presents a set of essays entitled Beyond Environmental Comfort, which stretch the meaning of comfort into new directions. To take wellbeing further, the word flourishing covers the intention to provide workplaces in which people thrive physically and mentally. How can we design flourishing workplaces which occupants thrive in, which are functional but are also expressive? In order to design a flourishing workplace, we need to consider how the environment is making us feel, behave and act within it. The flourish model proposed here is based on a multisensory approach which considers environmental factors, not only how these affect perceptions but also their impact on economic value by their influence on absenteeism, presenteeism and staff retention.
